Architectural and urbanistic operations after the 1998 Lisbon World Exposition

First debate “TRANSFORMATIONS AND EXPECTANT SPACES – WATERFRONTS OF LISBON METROPOLITAN AREA”

The project hosted a first debate on the 28th of November focused on the waterfronts of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and their recent and upcoming urban transformations, for a numerous audience of experts, students, and municipality representatives.

The event started with a brief statement of Pedro Costa, director of DINAMIA’CET, presenting the research center and the overall theme of the research project. Thereafter, the roundtable discussion, with moderation of the journalist Nuno Saraiva, included 15 minutes presentations from the panel speakers: Catarina Assis Pacheco, João Seixas, Jorge Gaspar, Luís Santiago Baptista, Paulo Tormenta Pinto and Sérgio Saraiva. Overall, the roundtable included views from design professionals, urban managers and academics, presenting implemented and planned projects as well as critical approaches and confronting the perspectives of architects, landscape architects and geographers on the given territory. After the debate within the panel, the debate proceeded to an open discussion with the audience.

This event provided the opportunity to gather different stakeholders, see implemented projects presented by their designers and open the discussion to the overall dynamics of Lisbon metropolitan area. As a result of this gathering, several topics emerge as future project research issues, be the need to decode the territory in its complexity or to address its sustainability in an environmental, social and economic perspectives.

As a side-even, an exhibition presented the design studio works for Trafaria, Torrão e Cova do Vapor by students of the Integrated Master in Architecture of Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon and photographs by João Carmo Simões.
