Architectural and urbanistic operations after the 1998 Lisbon World Exposition

Task 8
Investments, social cohesion and urban competitiveness

For this task, the main sources will be the Riverfront General Plan of Interventions.

The task will be devoted to the socio-economic study focused on the Lisbon context in the period after Expo98. At this level, the management models will be evaluated considering the constitution of public or private companies for the development of urban actions.

It will be established a matrix based on the different management models, in order to better gauge the investments that were made, thus analyzing the impact of the structuring operations on the various plans and projects, as well as their respective financial return.

At the level of social cohesion, lines will be drawn to discuss the extent to which the different plans and projects have introduced actions aimed at the social development of populations. In this field, cross-fertilization will be made between urban regeneration investments and the current structuring role of the tourism sector, as well as its importance in the local, regional and national economy.

At the level of the urban economy, the programmatic changes will be evaluated, regarding the investments that were made, aiming at verifying not only the intervened places functional alteration, but also the predominance of the new urban programs that were introduced. In this context, it will be also important to understand how investments have been incorporated to improve environmental issues and reduce energy costs.

In the sphere of this task, a basis will be laid for understanding the impact of investments in the urban competitiveness of cities, defining indicators such as: GDP (gross domestic product).
